Q If the electronic channel is that good, can I skip lectures?

A Well, most students do anyway, don’t they? Seriously, most courses require you to attend some face-to-face lessons, and you will be required to work in groups. So although you may feel that you could get through the course without any physical contact, there is much value to be had from interacting with other people. The other thing to remember is that it can take hours and hours to find what you really need from the Net. At least in lectures it is given to you without you having to locate it first.

Q How computer literate do I need to be?

A You can get by with only the minimum of computer literacy these days. Long gone are the days when you had to know how to build a computer from first principles. As long as you have some basic keyboard skills, know how to surf the internet and can use some of the common packages such as Microsoft Word, then you’ll be just fine. You can always take a crash course in computer usage if you are worried.

Q Can I use the ready-made model answers from the internet?

A You can, but it’s important to remember the purpose of following any course: it’s for you to learn something. One danger of relying on readymade answers – from the internet or anywhere else – is that you don’t need to think about what you are writing. Then when it’s exam time and a question requires something more than your model answer, you’re up the proverbial creek with a mouse for a paddle.
